What is Derby 101?
Derby 101 is our required training course for those wanting to join our league. It consists of 16 sessions, twice weekly, for eight weeks. In that time, we will get you on skates, provide skating coaching and technique help, and educate and teach roller derby skills, from agility on skates to hitting and taking hits. This program is built and run by our members who have been skating for years—no experience needed!
Do I need to know how to skate?
No, you do not need prior knowledge or experience skating prior to joining Derby 101, though it is helpful.
Who can play with us?
You must be at least 18 years old. All genders welcome. You will also need to be able to skate on “quad” roller skates (inline skates or rollerblades are not allowed).
Don’t want full contact?
You could join us as an NSO (Non-Skating Official), a Referee, or a volunteer. All roles are essential to the league, and we can provide you with more details if interested.
When is it?
We run Derby 101 every fall, usually mid to end of September to the beginning of December.
What about safety gear?
We will go over everything needed at the first introduction session in the fall to make sure you purchase the correct gear. However, we do have gear that you can borrow during Derby 101.
